Branch History
Formed by some of the same people who established the University of Arizona Poetry Center, ASPS has deep roots in the poetry communities of Arizona.
The Arizona State Poetry Society (ASPS) is a non-profit, all-volunteer organization chartered on September 11, 1966 to foster poetry in Arizona through education, publication, reading of poetry and fraternity of poets throughout the State of Arizona.
In 1966, Mabelle Lyon and Gladys Bagley Schaefer, two women from Sun City, Arizona, launched the Phoenix Poetry Society. The organization began with a membership of about a dozen members and grew each year, eventually forming 13 Branch organizations, of which four active Branches remain today.
In 1968, the Phoenix Poetry Society voted to become Arizona State Poetry Society (ASPS) in order to qualify for membership in the National Federation of State Poetry Societies (NFSPS). The Phoenix Poetry Society was then the first Branch of the ASPS, and the Tucson Poetry Society formed as the second Branch society in 1969.
