Poetry Circles
Poetry circles meet in small groups dedicated to certain types of poetry based on interest levels. If you have a unique interest in the art or have a poetry interest you have not developed yet, perhaps a circle is just what you have been waiting for.
CREATE A NEW POETRY CIRCLE
To get started, a circle needs three things:
A Focus
Choose something that sets your poet’s heart on fire, for example:
- The Art of Imitation (learning from published poems)
- Literary Devices and Forms
- Performance Poetry
- Writing Poetry for Children
A Champion
No special experience required, just a willingness to establish and organize a poetry circle.
A Plan
What’s your focus? When will you meet? How often? Where (in person or virtual)?

Every meeting: read our poems for a critique. Alternate mtgs: either a close reading of a brilliant poem – to learn and be inspired OR write to brief, general prompts: Hear the prompt; Put pen to paper; Write without stopping for 10 minutes – no planning, thinking or editing. This is a non-intellectual way of accessing memory, intuition, heart – allowing who-knows-what to rise to the surface. A great way to think outside your usual box and come up with something different…or.
